How Healthy Lunches for Kids in Preschool Impact Academic Performance

January 28, 2021

How Healthy Lunches for Kids in Preschool Impact Academic Performance
Preprimary education, such as kindergarten and preschool, is organized to provide children with extra educational experiences.

It grants three- to five-year-olds a few additional years of structured and inspired learning. This provides children with a strong foundation for future schooling. That's likely why 77% of 5-year-olds and 55% of 3- to 4-year-olds attend full-day programs.

The question for educators becomes: how can your child care facility further improve its students' academic performance for years to come?

The answer is simpler than you might think—by providing healthy lunches for kids.

Getting kids to eat healthy doesn't have to be challenging. Below, we discuss the benefits of healthy food and some healthy food recipes to make it encouraging.

The Link Between Healthy Lunches and Academic Performance

Providing children with well-balanced meals is vital to their health, overall well-being, and academic performance. But how, exactly?

Just like good, consistent sleep, a wholesome, nutritionally-rich diet is a building block to a healthier existence.

The CDC highlights some of the reasons why healthy eating is crucial in young ones:

  • It increases test scores and academic grades
  • It reduces cases of absenteeism
  • It improves cognitive performances, such as memory, focus, processing of visuals, problem-solving, etc.

Further, the CDC cites links between an unbalanced diet and poor academic performance. When children have insufficient food intake, are deficient in certain nutrients, or don't consume a variety of foods, they experience:

  • Greater absenteeism
  • Decreased cognitive performance
  • An inability to focus
  • Increased odds of repeating a grade

Put simply: food is brainpower. The right balance of foods—including specifics like fruits, veggies, and dairy products—contributes to a genuine improvement in well-being.

Combined with physical activity, your students will be in peak shape!

How to Encourage Healthy Eating: Tips and Meal Ideas

Now that you understand the significance of healthy eating, it's time to relay the message to your student base—and their parents, too!

The first way to encourage healthy eating is to talk openly about it. Tell your students that eating well can help them do better at school, in sports, and in their futures. They'll concentrate better, receive higher grades, and become better individuals.

You can also educate families. You might have an event that focuses on nutrition and exercise, an informative newsletter, or an optional class for parents. There, you can discuss some ways of incorporating healthy eating.

Some kid-friendly, delicious recipe options to discuss include:

  • Various soups, such as chicken noodle, chicken ramen, tomato bisque, or tortilla
  • Fun classics, like cheeseburgers and secret sauce, steak bites, or baked chicken tenders
  • Handheld snacks like apples and nut butter, popcorn, or veggies with hummus

Don't forget to make it fun and good-tasting! If you don't enjoy it, your kids probably won't, either. Make sure it's appetizing, which will encourage them to keep up the routine.

Serve up Greatness at Your Facility

You can make your establishment one that provides children with a healthy start.

By focusing on health and well-being, your students' academic performance will thrive. When adults offer healthy lunches for kids, students learn early and often why a nutritious diet is important. They develop good habits at a young age that carry them into adulthood.

Why stop at meals when you can make your facility even better?
