Developmental Milestones for Toddlers

Developmental Milestones for Toddlers

A toddler's cognitive development greatly blossoms between 12 and 24 months.

Watching your toddler grow is emotional and heart-warming. You enjoy observing them discover new sights, sounds, textures, and colors. Their curiosity is growing by the second!

Most parents carefully track their toddler's developmental milestones to ensure they're on the right track. Are you unsure of what these milestones are?

Parents, teachers, and employees of daycare centers can track the development of toddlers using the guide on developmental milestones below.

2 Months

At the 2 month mark of normal child development, your toddler should start smiling at people, turning their head towards unknown sounds, and following individuals with their eyes.

As you move around the room your toddler is in, check to see if their eyes are following your movements. Keep an eye out to see if they recognize your face when you walk into the room.

If they're engaged in play, turn on a song to see if they turn their head towards the stereo. Play a sing-along video with exciting visuals from your tablet to see how they engage with sound and moving images.

6 Months

After 6 months of child development, your toddler should be able to recognize if someone is a stranger, show an emotional response to other individuals' emotions, and exhibit curiosity about items out of their reach.

Are you having a new friend over for dinner? Take note of how your child responds to the new face.

Watch how they interact during playtime. Are they only reaching for items directly beside them? Are they wanting toys a few feet away from them?

Laugh and giggle with your toddler. See if they're responding to your emotions.

1 Year

In this stage of toddler development, your child should exhibit favoritism for toys, show fear in frightening situations, cry when you leave, and copy simple gestures.

Look to see what toys they typically gravitate towards when given a chance. While playing, perform simple gestures and see if they attempt to copy you. These gestures can be something like tapping a block or poking a squishy ball.

Even though you don't want your toddler to cry, it's a positive developmental sign that they cry when you leave their sight. Chat with their babysitter to see if they become emotional when you leave.

How Daycare Centers Can Help

If you're a staff member of a daycare center, it's important you also know the developmental stages of a toddler. Aid the parents in making notes about their child's progress.

Have you noticed a particular child showing no interest in toys? Is a child displaying inappropriate emotions in specific situations? Chat with the parent if you have a concern.

A great way to do this is by creating a system of daily notes to send home with the parents.

The Developmental Stages of Toddlers

Understanding the important developmental stages of toddlers is imperative if you have your own child. Keep a close eye on their growth to address any concerns that may come to the surface.

Track their facial recognition, interest in play objects, and emotional regulation. Daycare centers can help you out by keeping an eye on your child while you're at work. Ask them if they have any concerns regarding your child's development.
