Are you hiring teachers? In any educational institution, you need to provide your children with the best educators available. Knowing how to find them is not always an easy task, and you need to get it right.
Good teachers can change a child's life. Below, we give our tips on hiring teachers that are the best on offer.
The first thing you need to do is to check the qualifications during teacher recruitment. In teaching, being an expert in your field does not necessarily make you a good teacher. Just because you are a scientific genius with multiple degrees, does not mean you can teach the subject.
You need someone who has qualifications based on pedagogy, suited for the type of teaching you want. You may find a great teacher, suited to teach at the university level. However, their method will be very didactic and may not transfer to young children.
You may also find people who have teaching qualifications to teach languages. This is fine if you want them for linguistics, but it may not work if you want them to teach in other subjects.
You must know who is teaching the children in your school. A background check is performed on a person before they begin employment, and luckily are legal in most places. This will bring up any former criminal records they have, and let you know if they are suitable to work with children.
Anyone who has recently worked with children should be able to provide you with a recent background check. However, you should also conduct your own before they begin employment.
The soft skills of a teacher, and their general personable nature, are just as vital as their qualifications. The first thing you should notice is their communication skills. Are they able to talk freely and communicate in a professional but courteous manner?
After this, you need to know if they have great organizational skills. You may choose to ask them to prepare something for the interview or do a trial lesson to see how well they do with this. Provide feedback after the session, and see how open they are to receiving and acting upon it.
In the world of teaching, past experiences count for a lot. However, the more experience a teacher has on their resume, in terms of positions held, may not be a positive thing. It could show that they struggle to hold down positions or fit into the workforce.
Ideally, teachers should have had positions at a place for three or more years. If not, ask them why the position was short and let them explain.
When hiring teachers, never rush into appointing a position. You should do multiple interviews with various candidates to see which is the right fit.
